The presidential office said Friday it is considering designating Oct. 2 as an extra holiday so that citizens can enjoy a long vacation that lasts almost a week.
금요일 대통령실은 약 일주일간 지속되는 긴 휴가를 시민들이 즐길 수 있도록 10월 2일을 임시공휴일로 지정하는 방안을 검토 중이라고 전했다.
The Chuseok holiday runs from Sept. 28 to Oct. 1 and National Foundation Day falls on Oct. 3 and the envisaged designation would allow the public to enjoy a six-day break.
오는 9월 28일부터 10월 1일까지 이어지는 추석 연휴, 10월 3일 개천절, 그리고 구상중에 있는 임시공휴일 지정으로 시민들이 6일간의 휴가를 즐기게 될 것으로 보인다.
The office said the issue will be discussed at a Cabinet meeting, which will be presided over by President Yoon Suk Yeol.
국민의힘은 이번 사안이 윤석열 대통령이 주재하는 국무회의에서 심의될 거라고 밝혔다.
The move came as the ruling People Power Party made the recommendation to the presidential office and senior secretaries briefed the president on the economic and social benefits it could bring to the country.
이번 사안은 여당 국민의힘이 대통령실에 건의하고 고위층 관료들이 대통령에게 공휴일 지정이 국가에 가져올 경제적, 사회적 이득에 대해 설명하면서 본격화됐다.
The senior secretaries said the “golden vacation” would generate economic activity with people encouraged to spend time shopping, eating and taking trips.
고위 관료들은 ‘황금연휴’가 쇼핑, 외식 및 여행 소비를 장려해 내수 진작 효과를 가져올 거라고 전했다.
News of the potential holiday has elated the country’s tourism and retail industries with anticipation over rising demand and market revenues.
임시공휴일 검토 소식에 국내 관광업 및 소매업계는 수요 및 시장 수입이 상승할거라는 기대에 부풀에 있다.
Multiple tourism package providers said, while they had already seen a large number of people booking places on group tours between late September and early October, the reservation rate would likely spike further if the additional holiday is designated.
관광 패키지를 제공하는 여러 사업체들은 9월말~10월 초에 단체 관람 예약이 많은 건 이미 확인했지만, 추가 임시공휴일이 지정되면 예약률이 더욱 솟구칠 거라고 전했다.
The potential new holiday is also exciting workers who could extend the golden vacation by several days. For example, by taking a leave for three more days in the first week of October, they could extend their vacation to almost two weeks until Hangeul Day, another statutory holiday that falls on Oct. 9.
임시공휴일이 확정될 경우 황금휴일을 며칠 더 연장할 수 있게 된 근로자들 역시 기뻐하고 있다. 예를 들어, 10월 첫째 주에 연차 3일을 더 내면 다가오는 또 다른 공휴일인 10월 9일 한글날까지 총 2주로 휴가를 연장할 수 있다.
