The legendary musical “The Phantom of the Opera” is back in Seoul with a top-notch Korean cast and breathtaking live orchestral music.
세계적인 뮤지컬 ‘오페라의 유령’이 국내 최고 출연진 및 현장 오케스트라가 연주할 아름다운 명곡과 함께 서울로 돌아왔다.
The Korean-language version of the performance is making a strong third-time comeback with glamorous costumes, creative set design and engaging choreography.
우리말 공연은 화려한 의상, 창의적 무대 연출 및 매혹적 안무를 갖춰 극적인 세 번째 귀환을 이뤄냈다.
“It gives me great joy that The Phantom’s story will be told in South Korea once again in the Korean language,” the composer Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote in the playbill. He also noted that the show’s debut in 2001 attracted over 300,000 people, and a successful return followed in 2009.
제작자 앤드류 로이드 웨버는 안내문에 “‘오페라의 유령’ 이야기가 한국어로 다시 한 번 전해지게 된 것에 큰 기쁨을 느낀다”고 썼다. 또 2001년 첫 공연이 30만 명 이상의 관객을 끌어들였고 2009년에 성공적인 재공연이 이어졌다고 언급했다.
Adapted from the namesake novel by French writer Gaston Leroux, the award-winning musical is set in the grand Paris Opera House, where the enigmatic Phantom resides in a labyrinthine lair hidden beneath the theater.
프랑스 작가 가스통 르루의 동명소설을 각색한 이 화려한 수상 경력의 뮤지컬은 정체 모를 유령 ‘팬텀’이 미로 같은 지하 은신처에 숨어 사는 웅장한 파리 오페라극장을 배경으로 한다.
The Phantom also assumes the role of a mysterious singing teacher known as the “Angel of Music” for Christine, a talented young woman who takes on the leading role of prima donna with her lyrical voice.
팬텀은 또 서정적인 목소리로 주연 프리마돈나 역할을 맡게 된 재능 있는 젊은 여성 ‘크리스틴’에게 ‘음악의 천사’로서 비밀스러운 음악 수업을 하는 교사 역할을 맡는다.
This opportunity arises after a series of accidents at the opera ― suspected to be the work of “the ghost” ― leave the role vacant.

After her first performance as the chief singer, she reunites with her childhood friend Raoul, a nobleman and patron of the Opera. Their vows of love later enrage the Phantom, who plots disasters at the theater.
크리스틴은 주연 가수로서의 첫 공연을 한 후 어린 시절 친구인 백작 라울과 다시 만나게 된다. 두 사람은 사랑의 서약을 맺어 팬텀을 화나게 하고 그는 극장에서 재앙을 꾸민다.
The story is a blend of romance, mystery and tragedy told with striking and memorable melodies.
이 이야기는 강렬하고 기억에 남는 멜로디로 전해지는 로맨스와 신비로움, 그리고 비극의 조화로운 혼합이다.
While the longest-running show in Broadway history ended its 35-year run in New York City this April, the musical is being brought to other parts of the world, including on a national tour in China, as well as Osaka, Japan and London, United Kingdom
브로드웨이 역사상 가장 긴 35년 간 지속되던 공연이 뉴욕에서 마무리됐지만, ‘오페라의 유령’은 중국에서 국내 투어를 비롯해 일본 오사카, 영국 런던 등 세계 각지로 전파되고 있다.
