A long-since-vanished terrace for public rituals and ceremonies in front of Gyeongbok Palace’s Gwanghwamun gate was restored and opened to the public, Sunday, nearly a century after being removed during the 1910-45 Japanese colonial period.

오랜 기간 사라졌던 경복궁 광화문 앞 ‘월대(공공 행사와 의례를 위한 무대)’가 일제강점기(1910-45) 때 철거된 후 거의 100년 만에 복원돼 일요일 시민에게 공개됐다.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government and the Cultural Heritage Administration (CHA) held a ceremony at Gwanghwamun Square to mark the completion of the restoration of the ceremonial stage, called “woldae.”

서울시와 문화재청은 “월대”라 불리는 이 중요한 행사 장소의 복원 완성을 기념하기 위해 광화문 앞 광장에서 기념행사를 열었다.

Woldae is the stone-built ritual stage used by kings of the 1392-1910 Joseon Dynasty, and the one at Gwanghwamun is believed to have been established during the reign of King Sejong (1418-50).

월대는 조선시대(1392-1910) 왕이 사용하던 돌로 지어진 행사 장소로, 광화문 월대는 세종대왕(1418-50) 시기에 지어진 것으로 추정된다.

But it was reportedly reconstructed in 1867 during the King Gojong era, centuries after Gyeongbok Palace had been burned down during the Japanese invasions in the 1590s.

하지만 월대는 1590년대 일본의 침략 당시 경복궁이 소실된 후 수백 년이 지난 1867년 고종 때재건된 것으로 알려졌다.

But the woldae was destroyed in 1923 during the Japanese occupation, and streetcar tracks were laid down in the area.

하지만 월대는 1923년 일제강점기 때 훼손됐고, 해당 지역에는 전차 선로가 놓였다.

The ceremonial stage is about 49 meters long, 30 meters wide and 70 centimeters high. At its heart lies “eodo,” a 7-meter-wide path dedicated exclusively to kings. It was also a place where they interacted with the people and foreign envoys.

월대는 길이 49m, 폭 30m로 높이는 70cm에 이른다. 중앙 부분에는 임금이 지나도록 만든 너비 7m의 길인 “어도”가 위치해 있다. 월대는 왕이 백성 및 외국인 사절과 소통하는 장소로도 쓰였다.
