Two large trucks collided on the Gyeongbu Expressway in Seongnam, just south of Seoul, on Tuesday, leaving a load of sand spilled onto the highway and causing massive traffic gridlock during rush hour.
A 25-ton cargo truck and a roughly 20-ton dump truck loaded with sand bumped into one another at 6 a.m. on the Seoul-bound road near the Pangyo junction of Gyeongbu Expressway in Seongnam.
The drivers of the trucks, in their 60s and 40s, respectively, were taken to a hospital with serious and minor injuries, officials said.
The accident caused both trucks to roll over, with the dump truck spilling its load of sand in the process.
Authorities have made four of the five-lane road off-limits in an effort to retrieve the spill, causing traffic disruptions spanning six to seven kilometers near the accident area as of 7 a.m.
Police anticipate it will take at least an hour to recover the accident area, adding that the details of the accident were not yet known. (Yonhap)
